Kelly N-L. Scurry has always been a leader.
Now, he is running for Florida House of Representatives, District 97 to bring a new generation of leadership to Tallahassee.
A sixth-generation Floridian, Kelly is an attorney born and raised in Broward County, attended local schools, completed Youth Leadership Broward, was an American Legion Florida Boys State participant, and is an Eagle Scout. He gained celebrity as the twelve-year-old “whiz kid” from Lauderhill, as a contestant on Jeopardy! Kids Week, the classic television game Alex Trebek hosted. Kelly attended Duke University, earning a dual major in political science and history. He was active in student government, became a leader in his fraternity, was the Managing Editor of Online at Duke’s award-winning, independent, daily student newspaper, and sang in Duke’s gospel choir. As an example of his compassion for others, while at Duke, Kelly spent a summer as a research analyst for a South African NGO which lobbied the government for increased HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis treatment and care through the public health system. While an undergraduate student, Kelly also studied at Oxford University in England. After graduating from Duke, Kelly enrolled at the University of Florida Levin College of Law and obtained a Juris Doctor degree. While in law school, he studied international law at Universitè de Montpellier in France.
Civic-minded Family Values
For Kelly, public service is only natural. He comes from a strong military family background with many generations of distinguished service, and his mother is a veteran. He was a Student Volunteer at the former Oakland Park V.A. Outpatient Clinc. His parents and grandparents were union members and active in their church and community. His uncle, attorney W. George Allen, the first Black graduate of the University of Florida, filed a lawsuit desegregating Broward County Public Schools. Understanding the demands of running a small business, Kelly is continuing the legacy of Scurry Funeral Home, which has served the South Florida community for many decades. He learned the value of hard work, loyalty, and commitment from the examples set by those who came before him.
